Marco Caccamo graduated (summa cum laude) in Computer Engineering at University of Pisa on July 1997. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSUP) in January 2002. He is one of the Principal Investigators at the "Real Time System Laboratory" at UIUC. His research interests include real-time operating systems, real-time scheduling and resource management, wireless real-time networks, and quality of service control in next generation digital infrastructures.

Research Projects:

• CAREER: Adaptive Resource Management in Highly Dynamic Real-Time Systems with Physical Constraints. M. Caccamo (PI), National Science Foundation, CNS-0237884
• Real-time wireless and Implicit EDF: by exploiting the periodic nature of real-time traffic and multicast property of wireless channel, Implicit EDF and RI-EDF MAC protocols have been developed to support hard real-time wireless communication among collaborative nodes or for distributed control in factory automation. An implementation of RI-EDF is currently available on Crossbow Motes; in addition, an experimental testbed of distributed wireless control has been developed to test RI-EDF performance and prove its applicability for distributed embedded applications. • Hybrid hardware-software architecture for reconfigurable real-time systems: modern SoC devices enable the development of hybrid embedded systems where sofware tasks, running on a traditional CPU, can coexist with hardware tasks running on reconfigurable hardware (FPGA). The main goal of this research is to develop a SoC real-time computing architecture that integrates hardware and software execution in a transparent manner, and can support QoS adaptation by means of partional reconfiguration of modern FPGA devices.

• CSR-EHS: An Open, Dependable and Evolvable Software Infrastructure for Assisted Living. J. Hou (PI), Co-PIs: C. Gunter, L. Sha, M. Caccamo, K. Karahalios, National Science Foundation, CNS-0509268
• This project has the following web site (the Assisted Living Project) where news, software releases, presentations and publications are kept updated. As part of this project, we developed ALEIS, an embedded infrastucture for Assisted Living Environments. ALEIS uses RT-Chain protocol and was implemented on MICAz motes. It provides fall detection, an emergency audio link and approximate localization. This work demonstrates how a sensor network (enhanced with real-time communication) can provide a reliable, affordable, and non-intrusive solution for real-time monitoring of Assisted Living facilities.
